I Agree With Her

At the last BOS meeting Selectman Sheridan pondered why the BOS was taking it’s stipend back. She said it should be used to help the Council on Aging. (I agree and my solution would have been to split it between the COA and the Library). I realize that to hold the office you need to be considered a town employee thereby you must accept pay, so how about a dollar a year?

I would surmise that it was Selectman Haley or LeBlanc that negotiated for adding this money back into the budget as they were the BOS bugdet Sub-Committee representatives. Selectman Haley is quoted as saying “The feeling was the selectmen should not work for nothing.” Once again we have a lack of leadership on the part of the BOS.  In these terrible fiscal times we need leadership by example, we didn’t get it.

Although Selectwoman Sheridan rightly questioned it the vote was 4-0 to approve the budget. (Not sure who was absent that night). I remember when I first ran for Selectman I didn’t even realize that you got paid. No one does this for the money or at least thats what I thought.

Here’s the newspaper account:

Why would Connolly vote yes for this???

    Joe please let me know?

The “going back on the vote” thing is the worse offense. If they wanted to be paid fairly for a job, they wouldn’t have run for this office. If any of them truly needed the $2500 They got, I would be shocked. In fact, even now when they get their stipend, I hope the others who voted to give it up, give it to charity.

Unfortunately, what they have done is once again show a lack of true leadership. As well as go back on their word and their vote.

    We need and deserve better.

Cliff, I don’t have that answer, maybe Bill will let us know. I only know what I’d do if I were on the board, that would be to vote no. Like I said, I believe you must be paid something to be on the payroll as the Executive Officers of the town, but it could be a token payment.

What I find interesting is I agree with what Selectman Sheridan SAID, but she didn’t follow through and vote no either. As for Dickhaut not being there, not sure why…Plausible deniability maybe!!!

Actually, they were voting on the entire budget to get it done and to the Finance Committee for their public hearing, not voting line item by line item. I can see how it could happen. Still if I were them I’d revisit this and remove all but a token payment. Cliff, Maybe you should go to the Public Hearing and let them know this is unacceptable! I think it’s coming up real soon.

    June 29…see you there

  7. Joe says:

Cliff, The Town Meeting is June 29th, I meant that the Finance Committee has a public hearing on the budget that gets submitted to Town Meeting two weeks or so prior to the Town Meeting. Comments can be made there and taken into consideration.

    Thanks for the info

We are all going to need to grab some friends and neighbors for the 6/29 town meeting. It is a major vacation week and getting registered voters there will be difficult.

I would say plan on findings at least 5 people that will commit to going with you to the town hall on 6/29 at 7pm. Otherwise we will have no quorum, and no budget come 7/1.
